Shopping Kindness

January 11, 2015 by Diane Broos Leave a Comment

spreading-kindness-in-the-worldHave you ever heard the phrase, “I’m just looking.” Normally I use this when I’m shopping and salespeople come up to ask if there is anything they can help me with. I admit I’m one of those shoppers who prefers to help themselves unless I really, really can’t find what I am looking for. I guess this is the female version of a man who refuses to ask for directions.

One day as I was wandering around in one of my favourite stores and “just looking” I stumbled upon a find I could not resist. There before my very eyes were the most beautiful shiny objects. No, not jewelry, but that would have been amazing. What I did find was something more practical, the exact drinking glasses that I had been looking everywhere for. I was simply overcome with joy!

So image if you will, someone crouched down on the floor contemplating how I could get them to the checkout. The question was, could I risk leaving them there in order to get a buggy. Of course everyone in the store was after these beautiful glasses as well, or else that’s what I tell myself when I find something I want.

Suddenly out of the corner of my eye I saw a woman approaching. Could it be that she was looking for the same glasses? What a predicament I was in, to go or to stay that was the question. Much to my surprise she said she understood my predicament without me even explaining myself. How could she know?

It turns out that she had been in the same situation a few weeks prior and someone stepped up to the plate for her. She kindly stood guard over my treasures as I went to get a buggy. I was so grateful. You would have thought I had discovered an ancient treasure never before seen on planet earth.

This woman didn’t think that she was wasting her moments, she gladly invested them in me! In one way I was surprised by her kindness and in another sense I wasn’t. I believe in the life lesson that what you put out into the world comes back to you. So next time you see someone who you have the ability to assist use your moments. You will always get those back!

No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted
